Marus Bridge is a suburb of Wigan approximately 1.2 miles south west of the town centre. Geographically it is in The Makerfield Basin formed by higher ground to the north and west of the area. The highest land in the borough of Wigan is to the west, formed by the Billinge-Upholland Ridge on a north south alignment with a maximum elevation of 587ft. Beyond this ridge is the West Lancashire Plain extending west to the Irish Sea. Clearly this acts as a barrier against the prevailing winds, this combined with the urban aspect of the station has an ameliorating effect on the strength of the prevailing winds in Wigan. Occasionally, this topographical feature can create a weak rain shadow effect within Wigan.To the north east of Wigan is the Aspull ridge, generally whale-backed in form with Aspull at its summit. It is separated from the higher ground to the west by the steepsided valley of the River Douglas and a series of reservoirs known as the Worthington Lakes. The Aspull ridge slopes gradually to the east along the northern boundary of the Borough falling towards Manchester. Looking eastward from the Aspull Ridge there are extensive views of the western flank of the Pennines and the City of Manchester nestled in the Manchester embayment.
